What If…

Like all of the authors lucky enough to be a part of Carina’s launch, I am thrilled to be here with my sci-fi erotic romance novella, Alien Revealed!

Have you ever played “What if…”? Author’s do it all the time. We say ‘What if that girl was really a ghost?’ or ‘What if cousin Carson isn’t human?’. I was playing this game one night (admittedly I play this alone as I have found my family does not understand, except for my two young daughters, for some unknown reason) with a show on TV and the idea for a sci-fi erotic romance series grew out of nothing. It went ‘What if the girl didn’t die?’ and then ‘What if the hero fell for her when he wasn’t sure she was innocent?’ and then ‘What if this was in space?’ and then ‘What if she wasn’t human?’ and so forth until you would never know what inspired the story. I really can’t understand why my mom and sister won’t play this game with me, or why they look at me like I am from outer space. ;) Could be their logical minds—they are wonderful math teachers though, so I’ll pretend I don’t notice the lack of imagination. The ten year old and the seven year old get me. And so the Confederacy Treaty Series was born.

Here’s the blurb of The Confederacy Treaty: Alien Revealed, releasing June 14th, 2010 from Carina Press!

Inarrii agent Alinna Gaerrii was tasked with observing the Starforce base on Earth. Crash landing her observation pod onto the base was not part of her mission briefing. Neither was making m’ittar—mind contact—with Major David Brown, the human who discovered her amongst the wreckage.

David thinks she’s a psychologist sent to evaluate his Special Forces team, and Alinna goes along with his misconception, seizing the opportunity to observe humans up close. But their daily contact has unexpected side effects, and Alinna soon invades David’s dreams. Through their intimate mental connection she allows him to express his forbidden physical desires.

Alinna delights in the sensory exploration and grows excited by the prospect of a treaty with the humans and a potential life mate in David. But an attack from an unknown ship sends the base into chaos, and Alinna may be forced to reveal her lie, erasing all hope of a successful treaty, and driving David away forever…

I really loved writing Alien Revealed – I swear the story just leapt from my brain to the keyboard, unlike my other works which required month of careful plotting, writing and editing, LOL. I tried to place myself in the mind of a very lonely person, far from home in a culture not their own and imagine how Alinna would react to David. She quickly became very real to me. Her emotions were strong, and her sensuality was a pleasure to explore.

I’ll be on later in the day with a post that talks a little more about me and my writing methods, but feel free to pop over to my website or check me out and say hi on Twitter or Facebook! In the mean time, tell me, do you ever play the ‘What If’ game?

I love learning how you developed your story, Lilly. This is definitely on my summer reading list!

  2. Diane M. says:

I like when authors do “what if” it makes the story go in very unexpected directions.

  3. Lilly, what a fun way to come up with a story idea. Alien Revealed sounds like a fabulous story.

  4. Love the “what if” game, Lilly! And this blurb sounds delicious.

  5. Lilly Cain says:

Thanks Liz! The story is short, hot and full of action – a great summer read!

Hi Diane! I love playing “What if!” I think this is the reason that if you gave 10 authors a basic 5 line premiss you would get 10 completely different stories. :)

Thanks Anne! I really enjoyed writing this story – it just flowed. :)

Hi Cindy! Oh this one IS hot & delicious – like buttered cinnamon. ;)

The story sounds intriguing to the max. And I love the title! I think we are all aliens under our skins. :-)

  7. Pearl says:

I really love these “how the story was born” stories you gyys are sharing with us readers…! LOVE! Though I have always loved sci fi TV shows (Battle Star Gallactica-the original one-, Star Trek, V-original one and Sliders being among my favorites) I have little experience with sci fi romance, only Lauren Dane’s Federation Chronicles, Livia Dare’s Sapphire Trilogy and Gena Showalter’s Alien Huntress Series come to mind. I do look forward to this one and I will shut up about these gorgeous Carina covers ;)

  8. Amy Kathryn says:

I love sci fi romance…so glad that there is more and more coming. I love playing the what if game but mine tends to me more visual oriented with textiles or decorating. It is a definite creativity booster!

  9. Ilona says:

I know the ‘don’t get me’ aspect very well. Only my daughter and I can truly understand each other when it comes to story plots (she is an unpublished author who tries them out on me), my DH and four boys just look at us as if we are speaking a foreign language :D

I love the concept of Alien Revealed and added it to my wishlist a while back on coming across it elsewhere.

  10. Lilly Cain says:

Hey EC! That’s an interesting thought – could be a story there.

Hi Pearl! Nice to see you here! It sounds liek you do have a good selection of sci-fi romance – I loved the federation Chronicles! :) And you don’t have to be quiet about the covers – mine is wonderful!!!

Hi Amy, I think playing with color choices is a lot of fun too – right now I am debating which room needs an overhaul more – the bathroom or the kitchn.

Hello Ilona, glad I am not alone in getting those blank sort of looks. They look at me wondering what the heck I am talking about and I look at them and wonder why they can’t play along. :) I hope you like the story!

Alien Revealed sounds like an interesting read.

  12. Alice Gaines says:

I don’t know why other people won’t play What If. It’s a fantastic game.

    And, wow…look at that cover!

  13. Lilly Cain says:

    Hi Estella, thank you!

LOL Alice! I am so glad other authors understand me. My family loves me, but they don’t get how I work. And I am sure my latest t-shirt (Careful, or you’ll end up in my novel.) didn’t help. ;)

  14. Fedora says:

This sounds great! I love hearing a little about what kind of “what if” inspired the story! :)

  15. Lilly Cain says:

    Hey there Fedora,

It was a funny thing – this story just sort of said “Write me!” It started out with the what if game and just poured onto the page ‘like melted buttah!’ ;)

  16. MaryK says:

I love SFR. Can’t wait to read this.

  17. Lilly Cain says:

Thanks Mary – I hope you like ’em hot! :) We have 3 new sci-fi romances in the Carina launch – mine is a pretty hot novella length story. Hope you like it!

  18. MaryK says:

Oh, yes indeed. :D Angela Knight’s Secrets stories were my gateway.

  19. Heidi Hamburg says:
