My Perfect Imperfect Heroes

I have a soft spot for heroes who deliver on brain and brawn, heroes who are strong, competent and loyal, but also flawed, vulnerable and struggling to become better human beings. You might think that heroes like that don’t exist in real life, but I know better. My years as a Navy wife introduced me to a special breed and taught me about the complex hues of heroism. The men and women I met while I was part of the military community shaped my definition of heroes and heroines.

So I had tons of great material when I decided to write my Wounded Warrior series, a collection of hot romances about strong, self-reliant heroines struggling to find their place in the world and the skilled, sexy, kickass, military heroes who challenge their limits to protect the women they love. Take Ash Hunter, for example. He’s the protagonist of the series’ first novel, The Asset. A Navy SEAL wounded in Afghanistan, Ash flees from a military hospital, sick and embittered, only to find purpose as he risks his life to defend Lia, the brave woman he loves.

Ash has all the attributes that make the perfect hero. He’s sharp, brave and skilled. He’s mission-focused, brainy and alpha-natured. But he’s also an imperfect hero. He suffers from PTSD and is avoiding the tough decisions he needs to make in order to get better. Lia Stuart, the heroine in The Asset, is likewise resourceful, self-reliant and courageous. But she’s also an imperfect heroine, distrustful and fearful, hiding from the ruthless drug lord who terrorizes her existence. It is at the crossroads of their fears that Lia and Ash meet. Fear is the very emotion that gives birth to the greatest heroes I know.

So what makes my perfect imperfect hero/heroine? Here’s my top six:

A hero feels fear. In fact, his or her definition of courage involves facing some very real fears, inside and out.

A hero struggles and fails, but doesn’t quit.

ADM_3

A hero is strong, competent and skilled.

ADM_4

A hero cares beyond the self.

ADM_5

And last, but not least…a hero is adorable in more ways than one.

What’s your definition of the perfect hero?

A Wounded Warrior Novel, book one

Anna del Mar’s explosive, sexy debut novel in the Wounded Warrior series, perfect for fans of Lisa Marie Rice and Lora Leigh—the story of a woman desperate to escape her dangerous past and the navy SEAL who would lay down his life to save her
