Every book I write gets a playlist, and the OUT OF UNIFORM books are no different. For OFF BASE, I thought I’d share the top songs from my Spotify and YouTube playlists. This was a fun playlist to put together because my heroes are so different. Zack, my SEAL, is a country boy who kept trying to sneak more Tim McGraw into my playlist, while Pike loves club music, video game themes and movie soundtracks, and doesn’t get what Zack sees in all that drawl. Watching the two collide was a true writing—and listening—pleasure. Do you and your significant other share musical tastes? Have your tastes changed over time due to friends or other influences?
Humble and Kind, Tim McGraw. This is the Zack theme song. He’s struggling as a new SEAL team member, still figuring out who he is, but at base, he’s a humble and incredibly kind man, one whose heart of gold deserves protecting.
Wasn’t that Drunk, Josh Abbott Band with Carly Pearce. This song really spoke to me in the book’s opening chapters as Pike and Zack find themselves unexpectedly alone on a night out on the town.
I Won’t Tell a Soul, Charlie Puth. This song found me in the middle of the book as Pike and Zack dance closer and closer to a secret relationship. It’s my favorite song on a great album.
Handsome Man, Matt Alber. This really became the anthem of the second half of the book where Pike is deeply in love with Zack, yet can’t share that love with the world, can’t do anything couples usually do, and his pain is so real palpable as he sends his “handsome man” out in the world. This whole album from Matt Alber is just amazing, and I had it on repeat throughout drafting the book.
The Heart Wants What It Wants, Selena Gomez. Pike needs the lyrics of this song tattooed on his wrist. His heart wants Zack, logic be damned.
Just A Little Bit of Your Heart, Ariana Grande. That’s all Pike wants really, just a little piece of Zack’s heart. Everything else can sort itself out if he has Zack’s heart.
