Piper J. Drake’s Top Three Reasons to Write a Kiwi Hero

Hello, dear readers! I am so happy to share the reasons I decided to make Adam, the hero of CONTRACTED DEFENSE, an ex-military man of Kiwi heritage. I’m more than a little bit in love with Adam. Seriously.

Warning: Watching any of these videos could give you delicious shivers and result in a need for a cold shower.

1) All Blacks

Can anyone deny how inspirational these men can be? I knew rugby existed but when I became aware of the All Blacks, I became a lot more interested in the sport! The hero of CONTRACTED DEFENSE, Adam, is inspired by one or more of the All Blacks.

They also do imaginative videos like this one in Japan. I rather love the way it ends:

2) The Haka

New Zealand is rich in culture and history. Its people present their traditions proudly. Every time I have the chance to see the haka, I am filled with inspiration.

I would also love to see Adam perform the haka with his family someday. Perhaps in a future story? Hmm…

3) New Zealand, The Lord of the Rings and Karl Urban

This might seem to be a three-in-one but really, these three hit me all in one moment. I have a special place in my heart for fantasy warriors on horseback. Watching The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers when the riders of the Rohan come galloping down led by Karl Urban’s character Eomer…yes.

Whew. Yes.

I’m not sure our hearts can take a video of that.

Ever consider visiting New Zealand? What would you like to see if you could go?
