    • Name: LaQuette
    • Title: Restoring The Ranger’s Heart: Heart of A Texas Ranger 1
    • Genre: Steamy Contemporary Cowboy Romance with Suspense elements
    • Projected word count: 85,000
    • 200 maximum word query:
Can a Texas Ranger put down his badge long enough to fall in love with a woman who bends and breaks the law? Can he learn to trust again when the woman he’s falling for has devastating secrets? Can a woman guilty of ethical and criminal crimes believe the law will not only protect her but love her too? This book is the first in a proposed three-book series that assumes love has better rehabilitation rates than the penal system, and that opposites attract with explosive consequences.
    • First 100 words or first paragraph of your story:
“Dammit, Aja! Why are you so damn stubborn?”
Aja Everette stood in front of the window in the corner of her Uncle Ricky’s office with her arms folded across her chest. The scene could be something taken out of her childhood. Except now, as a grown woman, her pouting was about more than not getting her favorite toy.
Back then, she’d stand and sulk in this window until her uncle, Judge Richard Henry, would finally cave and give her what she wanted. Now, Aja didn’t have the luxury of waiting silently for her uncle to change his mind.

Title: The Lamar St. Jon Experience

    Genre: M/M Romance

Manuscript Word Count or projected word count: 56,500

200 maximum word query: LAMAR ST. JON is a 24-year-old lean chocolate money-making machine. He has a killer smile, a charming sensitivity, and a career spanning the worlds of modeling, television, and movies – and he’s completely over it. After the sexy actor known as ‘the millennial Will Smith’ walks away from the spotlight, Lamar takes another bold step: he comes out to his therapist. Lamar’s rediscovery of himself comes to a sensual peak upon meeting GIOVANNI ‘GI’ HUGHES, a strip club bartender at night who finds solace in being an artist by day. The two fall into a whirlwind romance that moves faster than either of them anticipate – until Lamar’s money-hungry stage parents land on his doorstep and bring their relationship to a screeching halt. When a matter of literal life or death corners him, will Lamar go back into the limelight for a quick buck, risking his new love and new freedom?

First 100 words or first paragraph of your story:
Lamar St. Jon was never good at interviews.
He sat across from Whitney Morgan, the lone female DJ for New York’s Chill 89 FM and would rather be anywhere else. He rubbed his sweaty palms across his trendy ripped jeans, his knee bouncing with a mix of terror and anticipation.
He was about to do it. Before most of the hip-hop station’s listeners would complete their morning commute to their jobs, Lamar was about to quit his on air.
Lamar’s thoughts were interrupted by Whitney easing her round frame forward in her seat. “All right, Lamar. We go on air in about sixty seconds. You ready?”

He knew women and that was definitely the sound of a woman’s heels clicking toward him inside the men’s bathroom.

    200 maximum word query:
Vakar is desperate to discover a way to protect his people against the Sherai, a destructive enemy that threatens to kill every man, woman, and child within the Seven Tribes. Vakar knows his small force of warriors better than any other leader. He knows they have heart, soul, and no chance of survival without aide from the Tawk tribe. But the Tawk’s crucial assistance comes at a hefty price. Vakar must break his vow to never marry and wed the leader’s half Vescha sister, Jayden.

For Jayden, marrying Vakar is an unholy bargain. The union jeopardizes the lives of every single one of her father’s people, but her mother’s Vescha blood courses through her veins, compelling her to fulfil a prophecy. Vakar’s vow of celibacy is his only defense against the ghost of a father who labeled him a bastard.

For his people, he will take a bride he never wanted.
For her people, she will risk her heart.
For their world, they will risk everything.

First 100 words or First paragraph:

    “No!”
The vibration of Vakar’s hand hitting the table startled the men assembled around him, the echo of his voice reverberating against the walls before dissipating into the high ceiling. These men fought beside him since he attained the rank of Captain as a young man and most gave their full loyalty. Not an easy task for a man whose father rejected his legitimacy. Ciren, his late father, leader of the Seven Tribes, had been a hard taskmaster. No one assumed Vakar would lead in his father’s place if he did not measure up to the man’s impossible standards.

    Title: DASHING INTO DANGER

    Genre: Contemporary Romance/IR Romance

Manuscript Word Count or projected word count: 50,000

    200 maximum word query:
These dads may not know how to polish nails, change, diapers, or anything else a normal father does, but they learn how as they get distracted by fierce sexy women along the way.
Dashing Dads is a series where men are thrust into the role of single fatherhood but aren’t single for long when the right woman walks into their path… or annoys the hell out of them until they can’t help but fall in love.
Book One, DASHING INTO DANGER, is the story of TANNER KING who owns a nationally recognized ridesharing service that ends up killing his own brother. Tanner is left as the appointed guardian for his five-year-old niece, but not everyone agrees with that choice. GINGER GRANT is sure Tanner isn’t up to the task, but she isn’t the only one who wants to sabotage Tanner taking on fatherhood. Ginger is adamant that she hates Tanner because of their intimate past and claims she doesn’t care when he gets blamed for being responsible for the death of his brother. But isn’t there a thin line between love and hate that usually includes some good sex sprinkled in?

First 100 words or first paragraph of your story:
Placing his head in his hands, Tanner King stared at his brother’s lawyer in disbelief. He opened his mouth, closed it, and then opened it again only for nothing to leave his lips.
“There’s no way it says that. Are you sure it’s not GG’s name on that document?”
“I can assure you, Mr. King, it is definitely your name I’m reading in your brother’s will. There’s no doubt about it, your brother and his wife left Katelynn in your care.”
It was the third time Tanner heard the words, but he was still hesitant to believe them. What had his brother been thinking?

    THE HOMEPLACE
    Historical Romance
    Projected Word Count – 250

THE HOMEPLACE is the story of Laydie, a female ex-slave living on a farm in the 19th century. She is purchased by a slaveholder who owns two other slaves. The three receive their freedom from the young farmer who inherits them.

This ex-slaveholder is married to a barren woman who suggests that her husband begin a relationship with Laydie. Using his privilege as a white male, a non-violent rape results in Laydie’s pregnancy.

At the insistence of the married couple, Laydie is compelled to become the second wife of the farmer. They live as man and wife, and he openly claims the child.
Laydie becomes the family’s matriarch and evolves into a powerful and wise young woman who begins to understand her freedom through reading and writing. Following her lead, the homeplace becomes a stop on the Underground Railroad.

I hold a master’s degree from Vanderbilt University with a specialty in southern history. I have a deep understanding of slavery outside the plantation setting, which is generally written about in historical romance novels.

I am certain that this work, which has none similar in nature, will be attractive to southern history readers, as well as fans of interracial romance.

    First paragraph of THE HOMEPLACE

Laydie grabbed her everyday shawl and rushed to the house to meet the others in the parlor. Out of breath, she entered and noticed the discomfort in the room. After removing her wrap and placing it on the arm of the settee, Laydie asked, “What’s wrong?” Mrs. Sarah grabbed Laydie’s hand and Mr. Jim rose from his chair and began, “Laydie, I told Jabo and Eli about our baby and I’ve talked to Sarah about what I intend to do. I know that men are supposed to be bound to one woman for life and I vowed that to Sarah. But on our homeplace, we’re not like others. You know that. Laydie, I want you to be my wife, too. We may not have a legal certificate, but will you be my wife and stand by Sarah and me as we all grow old together?”

    1. To the Editors of Carina Press,

Thank you for consideration of my work for further review. I will have the complete manuscript submitted before the August 24th deadline.

      Sincerely,
      Paula J. McGhee

      1. Evidently, I didn’t read the fine print but will have a manuscript submitted by August 24th. I’m new to this writing world and don’t understand how this all works. But one thing is for sure, I won’t give up trying.

    Title: Catching a Case
    Genre: Contemporary Interracial Romance
    Manuscript Projected Word Count: 50,000
Query: Who said you can never go home again?
Myles Monroe left town immediately after his college graduation, vowing never to return to his parents’ home, but also leaving behind the love of his life. He fled to the West Coast where he built a successful law practice, but always knew that his life was incomplete without her. Now Myles is back and has made his intentions known: he wants Gwen back in his life.
Gwen Austin was devastated when Myles left town, but learned to live without him. He begged her to go with him, but dedication to her mother prevented her from following him. She’s become an accomplished attorney and has snagged a major sexual harassment case, one that could solve all her problems. Too bad the client can’t pay the costs of litigation.
Myles finds out about Gwen’s dilemma and offers to help her. She refuses initially, but faced with no other options, she accepts his help. One condition though: she must move into his office during the pendency of the matter. Despite plenty of misgivings, she agrees to his terms.
Can Gwen and Myles move beyond their troubled past to find the love they once shared?

    First Paragraph of Story:
“I’d love to represent you in this matter.”
Attorney Gwen Austin suppressed the urge to leap out of her seat and do a happy dance. Who would have believed that she would wind up handling the case of the decade, maybe the case of the century?
“That takes a load off my mind,” Constance Murray sighed. “Everyone says you’re the best employment lawyer in the nation.”
“I wouldn’t go that far,” Gwen replied.
“Stop being modest. I’ve done my research. You kick ass. And that’s the kind of lawyer I’ll need. The law firm the network keeps on retainer is fierce.”

How could someone so drop-dead gorgeous be such a pain in her you-know-what? Deputy Public Defender Janiyah Renee Goode tried her best to concentrate on the witness’ testimony, but she couldn’t with Austin pacing in front of her. The man was six feet, three inches of yum without a lick of fat. Long and lean. His skin was the color of coffee after you poured in a dollop of cream and gave it a quick stir. And the man certainly knew how to dress. That navy blue suit fit him like a second skin. It had to be custom made. She could stare at him all day, every day.

First 100 words or first paragraph of your story:

Someone crept up behind him. He sat hunched over the long, dark wooden table in the library’s reading room. Samantha MacCulloch. Her cocoa butter scent told him it was her. “Come on, Alex, it’s just this once. I want to get this thing over with,” her familiar voice whispered in his ear. Her words tickled his skin. He looked down the cavernous hallway lined with dark wood shelves that reached up to touch the high, barreled ceiling. The library was built in the late 1800s and the white-haired, bow-tied man glaring down at them from behind the u-shaped mahogany Circulation Desk looked as if he were there when they laid down the first stone.

She stared down the bomb containment chamber masquerading as a trashcan, confirming that the word garbage was painted on the front. “It appears we’ve reached an impasse.”

First 100 words or first paragraph of your story:

Kendra Morgan stared at the male backside bent over a table in front of her and smiled. Widely. Surely the good Lord had blessed her today.

She saw a big, fat, Bennett shaped target.
Knocking a mental arrow, and laughing silently in maniacal glee, Kendra tiptoed closer. Closer. Part of her kind of expected the world to haze and bubble until surrounded by cartoon characters.
